Buckle up, because I’m about to be real honest for a minute.

We’re asked to review dog food and treats constantly, and to be honest, I often struggle with what to say when we try them. Did our dogs eat them? Yes. Did they seem to enjoy them? Yes. Do they also try to eat actual garbage every day? Yes.

But back in 2017, I bought some dog food that made me have SO much to say. It was from a local NYC business called Breuer Pet Food. Dave gobbled it down (of course) but what truly impressed me was the very clear quality of the food. It arrived at our Upper West Side apartment in little brown-paper packages (cue singing “My Favorite Things”) and you didn’t even have to read the ingredient lists to see what was in it. No mystery mush, just a fresh little packet of peas and blueberries and fluffy quinoa and ground turkey. It looked—and smelled!—like a side you might bring to Thanksgiving. I was shocked.

Last year, I wrote an update about how Breuer Pet Food had scaled their business into a new national dog food delivery service: Spot & Tango. When they asked us to try some, I was skeptical. I assumed that if their food was being produced for a national audience, it would have been packaged into the gloopy mush that we’ve all grown to expect from “fresh” dog food options.

Instead, I was amazed to discover that the food looked almost identical. When I thawed the frozen packages of food and fluffed the contents with a fork, they looked just like the little “Thanksgiving sides” I had loved before. And yes, the smell did actually make my stomach rumble—not a reaction I’ve ever had to dog food before. The quality of the human-grade ingredients, the perfect portion sizes, and the customization options made it the best dog food we’d ever tried.

Since we wrote our post, Spot & Tango has rolled out a full suite of human-grade small-batch dog foods, and asked us if we’d be up for checking out the updated options. I was curious to see how they had expanded on their existing product, and immediately said yes. I mean, you don’t say no to checking out dog food that looks like this! 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

To select our dogs’ food, I first took a little quiz about their body type and lifestyle. I completed it for Lizzie, describing her as a 26-pound, active, and ideal-weight corgi. There are also questions about your pup’s health issues, age, and whether they’ve been spayed or neutered.

With Spot & Tango’s new options, I was given three different feeding categories for Lizzie. Here are the options.👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

Spot & Tango’s Fresh Food

These frozen packets come in three different flavors. You can choose between Turkey and Red Quinoa, Beef & Millet, or Lamb & Brown Rice. They can be stored in a refrigerator or freezer. For a corgi Lizzie’s size with her health profile, the fresh options started at $39.87 a week (depends on which meat you choose) or $19.99 a week if you want to use it as a meal topper. (Remember that you can use our 50% off promo code, too!)

Spot & Tango’s UnKibble

UnKibble is Spot & Tango’s newest entree option. We did an in-depth review of it over here, but basically it’s fridge-free fresh food for pups. Honestly, they had me at the no-refrigerator part since ours is always packed these days, but I also love that it’s easy-peasy to serve like kibble. Except that kibble always makes me feel like I’m feeding the dogs cereal for every meal, whereas when you open a bag of UnKibble, you see real whole foods like chicken, cranberries, and green beans going into your dog’s bowl. For a corgi Lizzie’s size, UnKibble started at $22.36 a week. (Again, this is without any promo codes added.)

Spot & Tango Snacks

Snacks are Spot & Tango’s newest option—some healthy between-meals choices for when your pup has the munchies. (Does this happen to anyone else? Your dog tries to convince you it’s dinner time in the middle of the day?) These dehydrated single-ingredient treats are healthy and nutritious. If you can’t tell from the picture, our pups loved them—especially the Chicken Munchies! There are Yam Yums ($12.00 for a bag of roughly 20 large treats) and Chicken Munchies ($14.00 for a bag of roughly 23 treats).

Honestly, trying the new options was a great reminder of why I’ve loved Spot & Tango’s dog food for so long. Investing in our dogs’ health always feels like a worthwhile use of money, and the clear quality of the food is unlike anything I’ve seen from other dog food companies.

Pups all have different preferences and dietary needs, but to me, Spot & Tango’s options to tailor the perfect eating plan for your pup and your budget make it my favorite choice for feeding our dogs. Plus, it’s convenient to be able to get treats and food in one order.

In summary, is Spot & Tango the best dog food of 2021? We think so! With more options to customize your pup’s meal plan and stay on-budget, as well as extremely high-quality, human-grade ingredients, it’s a clear winner for both dogs and their owners.
