Anyone who’s been following The Dapple knows that 2019 was a year of big changes for us. We relocated from NYC to Seattle, we moved into a new home, we had a baby, and we started new jobs.

I’m hoping 2020 isn’t such a year of big changes (I can’t imagine how it could beat 2019!), but I am hoping it’ll be a year of small changes. Because in the midst of all the big changes, we definitely slacked off on some of the little stuff—things like working out, eating healthy, budgeting, and staying organized. I’m ready to make some small changes this year to reprioritize wellness, fitness, and organization.

In that spirit, I was really excited to kick off the new year by working with Spot & Tango. Back when The Dapple first launched in November 2017, I bought some of their dog food and reviewed it. They were still known as Breuer Premium Pet Food back then, and you could only get their food in the NYC area.

I gave them a glowing review because I loved that their dog food looked like, well, food. You could see peas and blueberries and quinoa in the little parcels that were delivered to our Upper West Side apartment. It didn’t feel like feeding the dogs mystery mush; it felt like feeding them a grain bowl from a fancy brunch restaurant.

Fast-forward to 2020, and Spot & Tango has become a national dog food delivery service. They have a sleek new website and cute new branding. When they offered our dogs a free shipment of their food in exchange for an updated unbiased review, I was a little skeptical about whether their food would still feel fresh and natural now that their company is so much bigger.

I placed an order for both Dave and Lizzie by taking a quiz about their body types, breeds, and activity levels. The site let me select which recipes I wanted and whether I was planning to use Spot & Tango as a topper or a full meal. For context, Dave’s food came to $26.43 per week for a full-meal plan or $14.83 per week for a topper plan.

A few days later, a cute box of dog food arrived on our door step. Each dog received their own boxed set of neatly organized packets of food in three flavors: Beef & Millet, Lamb & Brown Rice, & Turkey & Red Quinoa. You can get more details on the recipes and the twelve ingredients they use in their food here.

I was really impressed that in spite of going national, the dog food still looked like it did back in its NYC delivery days—basically like real food. That shouldn’t be a surprising for dog food, but it is.

I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I even felt a little hungry when I poured some Turkey & Quinoa into Lizzie’s bowl the first time—definitely not my normal reaction to dog food! But the pups’ meals also don’t usually smell like Thanksgiving dinner.

It’s not really surprising, but the pups absolutely loved the food and seemed to feel good after eating it regularly. And I felt great knowing that they were eating fresh, wholesome food. My review of Spot & Tango is definitely ten-out-of-ten-would-do-again.
