DIY Halloween Pumpkin Hoodie for Dogs
Oh hey there, pupkin.
Hiii! How is it possible that we’re already well into October?
This weekend felt SO fall—a dreamy cool and clear Saturday followed by a dark and gloomy Sunday that was perfect for watching football. But after how kind of weirdly anticlimactic the summer was, is anyone else still mentally in August? I’m shocked every time the weather feels like fall.
Anyway, there are less than four weeks until Halloween now, which means it’s time to squeeze all the adorable dog costumes we can into the next few weeks before we totally shift gears and start talking about all things Thanksgiving and Christmas—eep! And by then it’s basically Easter. Am I getting ahead of myself? Always.
Well, all of that said, today I bring you what is possibly the easiest dog Halloween costume ever. Like almost as easy as cutting two eye holes in a sheet for a ghost costume. That level of easy. Because, honestly, easy dog Halloween costumes are my favorite kind of dog Halloween costume.
Here’s the thing: last month I went looking for a cute pumpkin Halloween costume for our dogs and tbh, everything I found just felt really… tacky? Also, can we talk about how every dog pumpkin costume has the face on their backs? Why is this a thing? I guess it’s fine if you’re wanting to look at something festive while you’re walking your dog. Or if you’re taking an aerial photo of them? But don’t most of us want to take a cute Halloween photo that shows off our dogs’ cute costumes and their little furry faces? Is that so much to ask? Thank you for reading my rant if you made it through that paragraph. I just truly don’t understand.
All of that to say, I decided to make my own pumpkin dog costume. All you need for this easy-peasy DIY is an orange dog hoodie in your pup’s size and some stiff black felt. Just cut out the face of the jack-o-lantern and then glue it onto the chest of the hoodie. If you want to take your costume to the next level, you can also hot glue a stem onto the top of the hood. I had a spray-painted toilet paper roll ready to go for this and some green felt to attach as a little leaf, but after trying the rest of the costume onto the dogs (and remembering how much they hate having their hoods up) I decided to veto it. But if you feel like the costume needs a little extra oomph, there’s an idea!
As always with our DIYs, you and your vet know your dog best. While creating a cute Halloween costume can be fun for some dogs and owners, pets who struggle with anxiety or illness may not be well-suited to wearing costumes. If you’re not sure if it’s a good idea, check with your vet. And as always, never leave your dog alone or unattended in a costume.
Anyway, scroll on down for the full printable instructions and more pictures. Happy October, y’all! 🎃🎃🎃🎃
