Becoming a dog owner has been one of the best decisions of my adult life. I love taking our pups for long walks, snuggling on the couch with them, and seeing their excited furry faces at the end of a long day.

But you know what I don’t love? Brushing our dogs’ teeth.

Even though we tried to train Dave and Lizzie to accept having their mouths touched from an early age, they both gag and thrash through every toothbrushing session. And because it’s such a fight, it happens less than I’d like.

What’s even worse is that both Dachshunds and Corgis are especially prone to dental disease, so it really is essential that I keep their little chompers squeaky clean.

That’s why I was super excited to discover Petsmile. Petsmile is a no-brushing-required dog toothpaste. Yep, you read that right: no brushing required.

Petsmile was created by Dr. Irwin Smigel, a celebrity dentist who has helped perfect the flawless smiles of stars like JLo and Elizabeth Taylor. I had seen Supersmile—his toothpaste for people—in Anthropologie before, but I had no idea there was a pup-friendly option.

Petsmile is powered by Calprox, a proprietary formula that dissolves the protein pellicule on dogs’ teeth. The protein pellicule is where all the plaque, bacteria and stains hang out, so once it’s gone, your pup is left with fresher breath and shiny teeth.

Because Calprox does the heavy lifting of cleaning your dog’s mouth, using it is super easy. All you have to do is squeeze some onto an applicator, run it around your pup’s mouth, and then let your pup lick at it to distribute it. No wrestling required!

But my favorite part of using Petsmile is that I can trust it to really work. Believe it or not, Petsmile is the only Veterinary Oral Health Council-accepted dog toothpaste. The VOHC is part of the American Veterinary Dental College and only gives its seal of approval to products that have gone through extensive testing to prove they really do what they say. Honestly, I feel like I can sleep better at night knowing that a whole lot of people who know more about dog dental hygiene than I do approved our dogs’ toothpaste.

Petsmile comes in three different flavors that our dogs love: Savory Duck, Rotisserie Chicken, and London Broil. All three are silica-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

If you can’t tell, Dave is an especially big fan of the Savory Duck flavor. 👇🏻

Within the first week of using Petsmile on our dogs, I could already tell that their breath was fresher and their teeth looked cleaner. I’m thrilled that I don’t feel like I’m racking up a huge dental bill or damaging our dogs’ teeth with sporadic brushing.

Plus, it’s so fun to get puppy kisses that didn’t smell like garbage. Talk about a win-win! 🐾
